Originally developed by Carden Loyd and Vickers Armstrong this Carrier was built by Sentinel Wagon of England.
Other companies, such as, Thornycroft built carriers in large numbers during WWII in England as well as, in almost identical form, Canada.
These carriers were used by Commonwealth forces including the New Zealand Army in The Pacific,
The Middle East and in Italy.
One of 1400 3" mortar carriers built under contract no. T2249 between 13th of May 1941 and 2nd of Feb 1942, 80030 was the 83rd
completed in that batch.
This Carrier T80030 arrived in New Zealand sometime in mid 1941 and served with the NZ Army until the early post war years,
its 60hp engine determining its early retirement. However the locally produce carriers with their 95hp engine continued in
service until the mid fifties.
Once disposed of by the army, this carrier moved from Linton Camp to the Apiti region where it was doomed for destruction
beneath a row of Macro-carpas. However it was found by Military Vehicle Enthusiast Steve Denby in 1979 and rescued.
The restoration started with the removal of bucket loads of tree residue out of the hull, sifting it all for deteriorated parts.
Although reasonably complete the carrier was heavily rusted and required a new floor, track guards, engine covers etc.
The mechanical components were however largely intact.
By 1986 the carrier was back on rebuilt suspension units, the engine refitted and was almost roadworthy again.
The Carrier participated in many local events around the Lower North Island being transported by David's RL Bedford.
In 1995 Stephen had decided that the carrier should make way for other projects so David became the new Owner, having been
involved with Stephen in the Carrier from its recovery.
Although one of the best Carriers presented today David is still looking for additional pieces such as tool boxes.
